Sari Tolvanen

CEO / Founder

Sari is a Finnish marine biologist with a 20+ years career in marine conservation globally. For 10 years she worked for Greenpeace leading the organisations high profile campaigns to combat illegal and over fishing. In 2014 Sari relocated to Indonesia and co-founded a consultancy company Marine Change. In that role she focussed on innovative solutions to small-scale fisheries sustainability, marine protected area management and finance. Through working on these challenges she innovated Ocean Eye as a solution to the number 1 problem in marine management – stakeholder buy in. Sari has a proven track record of being able to scale and manage complex projects across the world and brings with her a global network of marine conservation experts to accelerate the impact of Ocean Eye.

Dr Mareike Dornhege

Dr Mareike Dornhege

Science Officer

Mareike holds a Master’s degree from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. from Sophia University in Tokyo. Her expertise is in marine ecology with a focus on shark ecology. She has worked extensively with Japanese fishermen across the country on collecting data on the impact of fisheries on shark populations and establishing guidelines for sustainable fisheries. Her knowledge has gained her invitations to many global conferences as one of the leading experts on the status of fisheries and their impact on marine biodiversity in Japan. She has published her research in various scientific journals including Nature and her public outreach ranges from podcasts to documentaries and hosting Shark Week. Mareike leads the biodiversity impact analysis of Ocean Eye.

Indonesia Project Officer

Ara was born and raised in a land locked city in Indonesia but her love for the Ocean and marine life led her to pursue her dream of becoming a dive master. Later as her passion crew she also completed a degree in fisheries and marine science. She started her career in voluntary position for a community group that advocated for the end in the use of single use plastics. After that she led various marine conservation initiatives for Bali based dive tourism operators including local community projects, coral restration and regular plastic clean up activities. She also developed engagement strategies including environmental education, webinars and others. 

Ara’s deep passion and knowledge of the scuba diving industry, environmental and social issues in Indonesia adds valuable skills to our team and she is leading the scaling of Ocean Eye and in its impact in Indonesia.

Paul Eka

Paul Eka

Community impact

Paul has a degree in sustainable tourism and has worked as development consultant and social entrepreneur. Paul has experience in designing and piloting sustainable livelihood programs for communities in South-East Asia (areas: ecotourism, agroforestry, fisheries, cultural heritage). He founded a social business on his home island– Lombok, Indonesia–where he focuses on empowering women through capacity development programs and the production of eco-friendly products that utilize local ingredients. He has established B2B partnerships with various businesses in Indonesia, Japan and Australia. Paul has also been involved in various research projects with particular interests in topics of gender equality, marine protected areas, and sustainable tourism. Paul’s in-depth understanding of tourism and community aspects of conservation brings valuable skills to Ocean Eye.
